A Celebration of Books and Authors, Founded by Solly Nkgalabi Mankga

Solly Nkgalabi Mankga, founder of the Second Try Foundation, started his love for books during his detention, where he turned his life around by going back to school and completing various qualifications. During this time, he completed his Grade 10-12 education, earned a National Diploma in Human Resources, a BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, and acquired an International Computer Driving License. Currently, he is pursuing an LLB with Stadio Private College and a Bachelor of Theology with Auckland Park Theological Seminary. His passion for education and reading has shaped the annual event, “A Celebration of Books and Authors,” held in Tembisa. The event aims to inspire authors, publishers, and aspiring writers, providing them with a platform to learn, network, and sell their books.

The event brings together authors and aspiring writers, offering valuable knowledge into the art of storytelling and the process of putting together a well-thought-out book. One of the key sponsors, Harvey World Travel, brings a business dimension to the event. Harvey World Travel is a trusted franchise network of independently owned travel agencies across South Africa and beyond, known for offering personalized travel experiences. Their participation provides attendees with exposure to the travel industry, underlining the importance of business growth through knowledge exchange and networking. As a sponsor, Harvey World Travel is more than just a travel agency; they have become part of an ecosystem supporting learning, empowerment, and community development.

Additionally, Forever Living Products, a company focused on health and wellness, will be presenting at the event. They aim to highlight the transformative power of their organic products, underlining how these can enhance the physical and financial well-being of individuals. Their participation underlines the event’s holistic approach, which prioritizes not only intellectual growth through reading and writing but also overall well-being. This inclusion aligns with the mission of creating a healthier and wealthier society, improving the quality of life for everyone involved.

Held once again in Tembisa, the event aims to instill a culture of reading in township communities, recognizing the necessary role knowledge plays in development. The event offers a second chance for those who may not have had the opportunity to complete their education due to various life occurrences. Despite the challenges faced, including funding and time management, last year’s event inspired 13 aspiring authors to write books whoop whoop, demonstrating its meaningful impact. This year’s event, with the support of sponsors like Harvey World Travel and Ndaheni Events, promises to be an even greater success, changing lives and enabling a new generation of readers and writers who will, in turn, influence their communities and promote literacy.

  1. I watched Mr Solly Mankga on a Podcast a few days ago. He mentioned that he was working on a project to build 243 libraries in prisons countrywide and would like local authors to bring their books to these libraries. I would be delighted to have the information to send the quotation of the two books I wrote since he said each author would be allowed a maximum of five books for each library.
