Sunday, January 28th marked what would have been the 36th birthday of South African rap icon Kiernan “AKA” Forbes. Tragically, AKA passed away last February, leaving behind his parents Tony and Lynn Forbes, his daughter Kairo, and his girlfriend Nadia Nakai.
To honor AKA’s memory on his birthday, his family gathered at the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg, where the rapper is laid to rest. The gathering was an emotional one, with Kairo placing her head on the side of her father’s tombstone, visibly moved by the moment.
AKA’s legacy continues to live on, with fans and fellow musicians remembering him fondly. Last week, Nadia Nakai dropped a single titled “Never Leave” featuring Kash CPT, as part of her upcoming tribute album to the late rapper. The song is a heartfelt tribute to AKA, reflecting on their relationship and the impact he had on her life.
As South Africans, we recognize the incredible talent that AKA possessed, and the significant impact he made on the music industry both locally and internationally. His music and artistry have touched the hearts of many, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
