Gen Z Is Fueling a Maskandi Renaissance—And Spotify Is Soundtracking the Movement
Once considered the soundtrack of Zulu elders and rural life, Maskandi is undergoing a bold, youth-driven reinvention. Thanks to a new wave of Gen Z artists—and a little help from Spotify—this traditional genre is succeeding in ways no one could have predicted.
According to Spotify data, Maskandi has become South Africa’s fastest-growing genre over the past two years, with nearly half of its listeners now under the age of 35. Gen Z artists are fusing it with modern influences like Amapiano, gospel, and hip-hop, creating a forceful and global-ready sound that still honors its storytelling roots.
Bhinca Nation, Spotify’s flagship Maskandi playlist, has seen a jaw-dropping 3,000% growth since 2022, now averaging over 2 million streams a month.
Other popular playlists like Zulu Love Letter and Khuphuka! are also helping the genre break out of traditional molds and into mainstream ears.

From legends to newcomers, this renewed energy has translated into real growth for artists:
