Jabulani Masilela Joins Tshedza Pictures’ New Telenovela on Mzansi Wethu
Now airing on Mzansi Wethu every Monday to Wednesday at 18:30, Homecoming has quickly captured the hearts of South African viewers with its mix of emotional honesty, rural roots, and bold storytelling. Produced by the acclaimed Tshedza Pictures, the series introduces audiences to a new ensemble of layered characters, one of whom is played by accomplished actor and creative force, Jabulani Masilela.
Masilela takes on the role of Shwabi Madlala, a character who adds weight, tension, and unexpected twists to the story of Zethu Hlongwane, played by Mpume “Six” Nyamane. Zethu, a bright young medical graduate, is forced to return to her village in Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal, where she must confront buried truths and forge a deeper understanding of herself and her heritage. Along the way, she connects with police officer and traditional healer, Sifiso Kubheka, portrayed by Thembinkosi Mthembu.
Shwabi’s presence in the village is layered with mystery and quiet power. He’s not a man of many words, but when he enters the room, you feel it. His intentions are never surface-level, and as the series unfolds, his connection to key characters reveals itself in both unsettling and compelling ways.
“For me, Shwabi is a man shaped by the land, by his choices, and by the things he’s refused to speak about,” says Masilela. “He’s part of the emotional architecture of the village, whether the people know it or not. Playing him is about silence, restraint, and moments that shift everything.”
Jabulani Masilela is no stranger to powerful roles. With credits in productions like Isono, Smoke and Mirrors, Brother’s Keeper, and Isiphetho–The Destiny, he brings experience, presence, and natural storytelling to every frame. Audiences may also recognize him from various national commercials, as well as his earlier career as a performer with Umoja: The Spirit of Togetherness.
Beyond the screen, Masilela’s background spans aviation, entrepreneurship, and the arts, making him a multi-dimensional voice in South Africa’s creative landscape.
