KFC South Africa clearly understood the assignment, and we are loving the sense of humour. Following the buzz around the Mseleku family meeting, KFC released a tongue-in-cheek brand statement throwing its support behind MaKhumalo and everyone in South Africa who is tired of sharing their food. The brand turned the very relatable “Mapha” culture into a full campaign, introducing the Mighty Bucket For One, complete with a contract that supposedly makes “Nix Mapha” your legal right. KFC even added the disclaimer that the contract is “legal-ish” and for entertainment purposes only. Now that is how you have fun with a cultural conversation.

The campaign gets even better because KFC teamed up with the Mseleku family, using the familiar family meeting format from Uthando Nes’thembu to build the story. In the teaser, Musa Mseleku sits with MaCele, MaYeni, MaNgwabe and MaKhumalo as they discuss the idea of sharing, with MaKhumalo making it clear that she has drawn the line. The storyline is deliberately playful, and the apparent family drama is part of the campaign rather than a real family dispute. KFC Africa CMO Hloni Mohope described the idea as tapping into something real in South African culture, particularly that person who simply cannot resist helping themselves when something good is on the table.

And honestly, this is the kind of brand strategy that gets people talking without feeling like a traditional advert. KFC has taken a conversation South Africans already understand, brought in personalities audiences already know, added humour and turned the whole thing into a product people can actually buy. The brand’s social caption doubles down on the joke, telling Mzansi to sign the contract and protect themselves from the “Mapha pandemic”, while reminding everyone that the contract is, of course, only “legal-ish”. The campaign’s full reveal is set for 22 September 2026, making this one clever way of turning entertainment, social conversation and a bucket of chicken into one big marketing moment.
