Mahuma Institute for the Arts Empowers South African Artists Amidst Economic Challenges

Polokwane, January 2024 – The Mahuma Institute for the Arts (MIA) is taking bold steps to address longstanding economic disparities within South Africa’s arts industry. The institute has extended the deadline for its 3-Month Masterclass program, aiming to empower aspiring artists and foster economic growth within the sector.

For the past two decades, MIA has been at the forefront of transformative changes within the arts industry, acknowledging the complex issues hindering economic prosperity for South African artists. Matome Rapetsoa, CEO of MIA, emphasized that the decision to extend the deadline goes beyond meeting high demand; it is a crucial move towards providing a fair chance for artists to showcase their talents and contribute to bridging economic gaps.

“Despite significant strides by millions of South Africans in various professions within the 30 years of South African democracy, the arts sector remains one of the few yet to fully benefit economically. Artists continue to grapple with financial struggles, limited job security, and challenges in achieving sustainable livelihoods,” said Rapetsoa.

The extended audition deadline is a manifestation of MIA’s commitment to addressing economic challenges faced by aspiring artists. Rapetsoa stated, “Our dedication goes beyond extending deadlines; it is about breaking down economic barriers. The extension of the audition deadline is a crucial step in our dedication to empowering artists economically and fostering a more inclusive arts community.”

In addition to the extended audition deadline, MIA has introduced comprehensive online submission options for auditions, overcoming historical challenges of limited access to empowering information and opportunities within the arts industry.

By allowing candidates to submit audition videos online, regardless of their geographical location, MIA aims to champion inclusivity and democratize access to transformative opportunities. The extended timeline for auditions and the Masterclass is as follows:

  • Audition Deadline: January 31st, 2024
  • Registration Period: February 15th to February 29th, 2024
  • Classes Commence: March 4th, 2024
  • Classes Conclude: May 31st, 2024

Major production houses in Mzansi, including Mahuma Group (Pty) Ltd and Get Down Productions, eagerly seek fresh talent, making the Masterclass a catalyst for economic growth and employment opportunities within the arts. As MIA continues its mission, it stands as a beacon for change, striving to reshape the landscape of the South African arts industry for the better.
