Skincare influencers love talking about ten-step routines with serums, LED masks, and gadgets that need to be plugged in. That whole world falls apart the moment stage 4 hits and the lights go out for four hours. Load-shedding has quietly forced a lot of people to rethink what “routine” even means. You cannot rely on a facial steamer or a heated jade roller if you don’t know when the power will come back. So the routine gets simpler almost by necessity. A basic cleanser, something you can apply in the dark by feel, and a moisturizer that doesn’t need refrigeration become the real MVPs.

There’s actually a case for this being better skin advice than half of what’s on social media. Fewer products means fewer chances to irritate your skin, and skipping the gadgets forces you to focus on consistency instead of novelty. People have started keeping a small battery-powered lamp by the bathroom mirror just to get through their evening routine, and some have switched to fridge-free products entirely so a long outage doesn’t ruin an expensive serum. It’s not glamorous, but it works, and it’s a good reminder that skincare doesn’t need electricity to be effective. Sometimes the blackout is doing more for your routine than the ten-step plan ever did.
