There was a time when being tired meant you had physically done a lot. Today, many people are tired before the day has even properly started. It is becoming more common to hear people say they are drained, overwhelmed or mentally checked out, even when their schedules are not packed from morning until night.
Part of the problem is that our brains are constantly working. We wake up and immediately reach for our phones, scroll through updates, answer messages and consume endless information before we have even had breakfast. Our minds never truly get a chance to rest because we are always connected to something.
There is also an invisible pressure to always be productive. We are told to build businesses, create content, exercise, network, save money and still have a social life. While ambition is not a bad thing, constantly feeling like you are behind can slowly become emotionally exhausting.
Perhaps the question is not whether we are doing too much, but whether we are allowing ourselves enough moments to simply exist. Maybe resting is no longer a luxury. Maybe it is becoming a necessity if we want to function at our best.
